Awla (Indian gooseberry) Candy

Awla (Indian gooseberry) is the richest source of natural vitamin C . It has the same amount of vitamin C present in two oranges. Due to high Vitamin C content Awla has anti oxidative properties. Awla also helps to prevent respiratory disorders such as common cold, bronchoitis. Awla also helps in improving body weight. It helps in increasing the total protein level due to positive nitrogen balance. Thus it is known to give an anabolic effect in the body. Awla is considered as one of the highly nutritious fruit. Apart from Vitamin C, Awala also provides many other essential minerals to the body.
Knowing these qualities of Awla, our ancestors used it in different ways as a digestive. Awla candy is one of the varieties of awla. My Aai used to give us this candy whenever we were having acidity problem. You can eat it after your meal as a digestive or give it to your child instead of toffee.



Ingredients

Awla - 1 kg
Sugar- 2 kg.


Procedure
Wash Awlas neatly. Cook it in a pressure cooker up to one whistle. Let it cool. Remove seeds from Awla. Cut it in to four pieces.
In a big vessel take these Awlas & add sugar. Mix it well. Put it in a glass jar. Keep this mixture in sunlight for 3-4 days. Sugar will get dissolved. Drain the sugar syrup. You can use this syrup as Awla Sharbat. Now, spread the Awla pieces on a tray and dry it in shadow, till pieces become stiff. Store in airtight container. You can use it for 1 year.

Hi Sapna,

Just add water little above the awla level when you put into pressure cooker.
